Because I spent the majority of the last monthly traveling, I decided it was time to do a newsletter on astrocartography and relocation charts. Astrocartography is something I get asked about A TON, and there are shockingly no books written on it (if you're a fellow astrologer, you should get on that ASAP), so I thought why not do a little explainer! But first, I’ve got some life updates to share.
Thank you to everyone who has purchased my book so far! The book tour in London was amazing, I can’t believe how many people showed up for me, and I am so grateful to have a community of people who are just as passionate about astrology as I am. Right now, my book is available only at UK retailers, but it can still be shipped anywhere in the world. So if you're in America, you can buy it. I recommend using Blackwell’s for free international shipping. The book will come out in American retailers on January 16, 2024, so that’s when you’ll be able to buy it from Amazon US, Barnes & Noble, etc. And I will def be doing NYC book events around that date. Sorry if this has been confusing! Later in this newsletter, I’m going to get into why my career is so tied to the UK, rather than the US, because it is 100% explained by my relocation chart.
I’ve also been getting frequent questions about the status of my podcast, Astrology and You, so I thought it was time to give an update on that. We (aka my cohost, Maxine, and I) have decided to stop updating it. It felt like it had come to a natural end, and personally I felt like I had exhausted all of my creative ideas there. I loved being apart of a work partnership, and doing that podcast really helped me to grow my confidence in teaching and speaking, but we were both ready to pivot in new directions. I do miss having a place to speak so openly about astrology though, so stay tuned for something exciting coming this fall…
Monthly Recommendations
Here is what I’ve loved consuming recently.
Cruel Summer Season 2: I love a teen drama. Season 1 was so good, and I’m still waiting to see how this season pans out, but I love all of the Y2K nostalgia. And the main guy who is the love interest is kind of hot in a weird way?!
Black Mirror Season 6: I said this on Instagram, but Black Mirror is what I always think about when I reflect on what Pluto in Aquarius will look like - a literal fear of technology getting out of hand. I’ve watched a couple of episodes this season, which were amazing, but I still need to finish them all.
I feel like I’m in a reading rut and haven’t come across a truly amazing book recently. If anyone has good recs, please let me know in the comments. For reference, my favorite books so far this year have been Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow, The Dutch House, and Summer Sisters. I love a fiction book that covers multiple decades and tells the full back story of the characters. I’m about to start The Celebrants by Steven Rowley and then follow it with Mad Honey by Jennifer Finney Boylan and Jodi Piccoult.
An Intro to Astrocartography
Okay, on to the main topic of the month. First let’s do a brief explainer on astrocartography, and then I want to introduce a lesser known, but just as fun technique called the relocation chart.
To follow along and access your astrocartography map, all you need to do is go to Google and type in the search bar “astro.com map” and click on the first link that pops up. It should be titled “Horoscope AstroClick Travel.” From there, you will enter in your birth information at the top, and from a drop down you can select what continent you’re interested in viewing.
You're going to see a lot of colored lines running across the map. Around the border of the map image, you will see that each line is associated with a particular planet and an angle of your chart. Refer to the image above. So for example, you may see a brown line that has the symbol for Saturn at the top with the letters “MC” below it. That would indicate a Saturn Midheaven line. Or you may see a dark green line with the symbol of Venus and the letter “DS” below it. That would be a Venus descendant line. What does all of this mean though?
Basically, astrocartography takes your birth chart and shows what it would look like if you were born at that same moment in time in a different city of the world. The different longitude, latitude and time zone will shift where the planets fall in your chart. Lines appear on the map to indicate when a planet in your birth chart has shifted to now fall at an exact degree of an angle (ascendant, descendant, MC, IC) in your birth chart. If no planet has moved to reach an angle, a line will not appear through that city or country. So going back to that previous example above, when you see a brown Saturn MC line for instance, you can know that in your birth chart for that particular city, Saturn would have shifted to fall on your Midheaven. It might be in your 8th house in your regular birth chart, but when the chart adjusts to that other city, suddenly you have Saturn conjunct the Midheaven, and you feel the energy associated with that particular aspect.
Play around with the map on your own time, and you should start to get the hang of it. You can also click on each line that appears, and a brief description of what that line means exactly will appear next to the map. Like with any astrology explanations you find on the internet, take these with a grain of salt, because there might be some dooms day type descriptions. If you want to learn how to interpret the lines on your own, blend the meaning of the angle and the planet that are associated with that line. So going back to our previous example, the Saturn MC brown line would likely mean you would need to restructure (Saturn) your career (Midheaven) in that city or take work (Midheaven) super seriously (Saturn), but also be a bit stressed out (Saturn) by it. Meanwhile, a brown Saturn DS line would mean you may feel stress (Saturn) coming from your relationships (Descendant), and you may have to put in more effort (Saturn) when dating or get clear on what you do and don’t want (Saturn) in close partnerships (Descendant). That line probably wouldn’t be the best place to honeymoon…just saying.
To give some examples of how other planetary lines might feel: moon lines may feel like home, or they could bring up a lot of emotions related to family and early childhood. Meanwhile, a sun line might be where you gain a greater sense of identity and feel more comfortable expressing your full self. A Jupiter line would be great for education and enjoying travel - if you're interested in getting a degree in another country or doing a study abroad program it would be amazing to do so on a Jupiter line.
I mentioned this briefly above, but to reiterate, if you're looking at the place where you were born or any other city for that matter, and you don’t see a line running through it, it just means that a planet has not been brought to an angle of your birth chart in that city. To better interpret what that city will be like for you, we need to refer to the relocation chart…
The Relocation Chart
When pulling up a relocation chart, you will want to go to astro.com, then click on the “charts and calculations” section then click on “extended chart selection.” It should take you to a page where you can enter in your birth information at the top. Below that you will see a section titled “Sections” and then below that a drop down called “Chart type.” Click on that dropdown and select “relocation chart (needs ref. place).” Refer to the image below if you need help.
Once you pull up your relocation chart, it will look identical to your birth chart. At the very bottom of the page below the chart, in blue text it says “click to choose a different reference place”. Click on that, and from there you can enter in any city in the world. If you choose somewhere far enough away from where you will born, you can see how the planets in your chart shift to different houses and how the rising sign is now completely different.
Whereas the astrocartography map only indicates when planets meet up with any of the four angles in your chart, the relocation chart shows what houses the planets shift to, even if they aren’t touching angles. So you get all this additional insight into what parts of your chart are activated in every single city, no matter what. Again, if you're entering in a city that is similar in timezone and longitude/latitude to where you were born, the chart is not going to change much. The planets will probably all still fall in the same houses, and you will likely have the same rising sign.
I want to give a personal example of how I’ve seen the energy of the relocation chart manifest in my own life. Below you will see images of my regular birth chart next to my relocation chart set to London, England. Note how all of my planets in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) shift from being in the 4th, 8th and 12th houses in my birth chart to now being in the career oriented houses - 2nd, 6th, 10th - in my relocation chart. And Jupiter on the ascendant! Way more of a positive focus on career for me in London.
My regular birth chart on the left, and my relocation chart for London on the right.
I have only lived in the UK for a year and half, and it was when I attended grad school at age 23 from the fall of 2015 until the end of 2016. Throughout college, I had been applying to fashion internships in New York and had zero success hearing back. Within a month of starting school in London, I had friends in my grad school course connecting me to internship opportunities, which led to even more internships from there. Although I had to return to the US at the end of 2016, because it was impossible to get a work visa for an entry level magazine job, work opportunities have continued to pop up from the UK ever since. When I left my job to be a full time astrologer in 2019, British Vogue reached out several months later, asking if I wanted to do horoscopes for them. In 2021, I put out into the universe that I wanted to write a book and had started writing an outline on my own, and then a literary agent from London contacted me. My book then ended up being published in the UK first before America. I have more Instagram followers based in London than I do in Los Angeles, which is shocking, because L.A. is like the astrology capital of the world. I didn’t actively pursue any of these things, they simply came my way when the timing was right (that’s another topic altogether on career timing). And while yes, I still have lots of great work opportunities in New York, which is why I love living here, it feels like the more major, career defining opportunities always come from London.
my relocation chart for Rome, Italy
To give another example, I’ve included my relocation chart for Rome, Italy above. The Aquarius and Pisces planets which are usually in my 7th and 8th houses have shifted to the 4th and the 5th houses in Italy. You can see that the sun and Mercury in this chart both fall really close to the IC angle, so in my astrocartography map, you would see Mercury and Sun lines running through Italy. Italy is where I feel the most at home, way more than Tennessee where I grew up. I go back to Italy every single year, sometimes twice a year if possible. It’s a place where I feel relaxed and comfortable, indicated by the 4th and 5th house emphasis. However, Italy is not conducive to work for me. Aside from Chiron in the 10th and the North Node in the 2nd, there are no actual planets occupying any of the career houses. I went there last summer to try to write part of my book, and no writing got done, so I learned my lesson.
Though I have lived in and visited both London and Italy many times, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to physically go to a city where you have an astrocartography line in order to feel its influence. You may simply have a fascination with learning about that particular culture or love the food that originates from there. It could also be that traditions from that country pop up within your career or hobbies too.
If you have no plans of moving anywhere, but are looking to plan a relaxing vacation or honeymoon in another city, I would use these two charts as a resource to find where you might feel the most relaxed. 5th, 3rd and 9th house planets in the relocation chart would be great, and same with Venus, Sun, and Jupiter lines on the map. We’ve also only just scratched the surface with both of these types of charts today, so know that you can go way more in depth with either of these techniques. If you’re interested in getting an astrocartography reading or finding more in depth resources on this topic, I recommend Daniela of @thecosmiclatte_ on Instagram, and also my good friend @maxineluzia who I believe created a whole workshop on this topic.
I’m a Virgo rising and have big transits happening later in the year for travel- which I thought was so unlikely because I’m a full time midwifery student and have NO money haha. But I was accepted for an all expenses paid trip through my uni to go to Japan. We’ll be making presentations about birthing in Australia at a University in Yokohama. When I looked at my chart… I have an EXACT crossover RIGHT on Yokohama- my DC moon line and IC NN line. It really feels fated.
Soooo interesting. My moon IC line runs through chicago where my mom is from. I grew up going there my entire life and lived there briefly all of 2017 and it always felt like home to me. Leaving the city was harder than ending my relationship lol
